Marwan Abubaker

Marwan Abubaker is a man of many passions—farming, food, animals, and environmentalism—all of which have shaped his diverse career spanning over fifteen years. With experience across agriculture, fish farming, and community services, Marwan’s journey took a transformative turn when he discovered his true calling in the developmental sector.
In 2009, Marwan joined Radio Active, a community radio station, where he spearheaded various community-based projects. Among his notable contributions are the co-founding of initiatives such as Stray Pals—a project focused on street dog management and welfare in Bangalore—and Waste Management Initiatives, aimed at promoting decentralized waste management in the city. As a founding member of the Solid Waste Management Roundtable (SWMRT) in Bangalore, Marwan played a pivotal role in piloting the first Dry Waste Collection Center in HSR Layout in 2011, laying the groundwork for neighborhood-based waste management solutions.
Since 2013, Marwan has lent his expertise to cities across India, including Port Blair, Andaman Nicobar Islands, Jamshedpur-Tata City, and Kote-Mangalore, assisting with the implementation of municipal solid waste management initiatives. His dedication to promoting sustainable practices extends beyond hands-on work, as evidenced by his co-authorship of a paper on the Informal Waste Workers’ Contribution in Bangalore, highlighting their economic significance to the city.
